Discovering My Passion for Mental Health
From an early age, I noticed that people perceive life differently. As a child, I often felt socially isolated and questioned why my thoughts and emotions seemed different from others. Over time, I realized that this uniqueness was not a weakness but a strength—it allowed me to understand emotions deeply and see the world from a different perspective.
Everything changed in ninth grade when I discovered my ability to help others. I noticed that people naturally opened up to me about their struggles, and I had an instinct for understanding their emotions. The more I listened and offered support, the more I saw the impact of my words and presence. This realization gave me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. As I embraced this skill, my confidence grew, my academic performance improved, and I started seeing life with newfound clarity.
Turning Interest Into a Career
When I moved to the city for further studies, I took time to reflect on my interests, abilities, and aspirations. I realized that supporting people through emotional challenges was not just something I enjoyed—it was something I was meant to do. This passion led me to study behavioral sciences and later specialize in clinical psychology.
The more I learned, the more I fell in love with the subject. However, I quickly realized that theory and practice were vastly different. One major challenge was the stigma surrounding mental health—especially in my hometown, where there were no active mental health professionals. If any existed, they had moved elsewhere to practice. People also had misconceptions about psychology, often viewing it as an unimportant or insignificant field.
Gaining Experience and Inspiration
After completing my degree, I started working on a mental health RCT research project. This experience was a turning point in my journey. The project’s impact on people’s lives was profound, and the ambitious vision of the project lead inspired me. It reinforced my belief that even helping one person could create a ripple effect of change. After working with the project for a year, I knew it was time to take the next step. I enrolled in a clinical psychology program while gaining hands-on experience. My desire to create something meaningful grew stronger, and I decided to return to my hometown to fill the gap in mental health services.
The Birth of Sofia’s Wellbeing Consultancy
Starting Sofia’s Wellbeing Consultancy was not easy. I faced skepticism, resistance, and countless challenges. In the beginning, I approached multiple organizations with proposals, hoping to collaborate and bring mental health awareness to the forefront. However, most of them did not take my work seriously or did not see mental health as a priority. Some dismissed my ideas outright, while others showed initial interest but never followed through.
Despite these setbacks, I remained determined. I kept refining my approach, learning from every rejection, and looking for opportunities to prove the importance of mental health services. The breakthrough finally came when a well-known organization in my area recognized my professional skills and trusted Sofia’s Wellbeing Consultancy for their mental health needs. This first major project validated my work and gave me the confidence to expand my services. It was a defining moment that reassured me I was on the right path.
The initial phase was full of learning. Some strategies worked, while others needed adjustment. But with persistence, adaptability, and support from my community, I kept moving forward.
